Leaving Religion in Budta

Budta has the architecture of Catholic institutional life visible everywhere, but the personal practice underneath has been thinning for two generations. The wider Philippines religious landscape: Catholic majority (~79%, the only majority-Catholic country in Asia), Protestant/Pentecostal minority (~10%), Iglesia ni Cristo (~3%), Muslim minority (~5%, mostly in Mindanao).

Budta has the critical mass for alternative communities and non-religious social life. It is not New York or London, but it is big enough that leaving organized religion does not mean leaving all organized community.

Budta ranks near the top of Philippines by population. That means more anonymity, more diversity, and more room to build a life outside the religious container you came from.

The cost of leaving religion in Budta is higher than in more secular places. Community shunning is normalized in some traditions here, and the person who leaves may find that doors close — socially, professionally, and inside the family — in ways that make the rebuild a serious project rather than a weekend decision.
