Leaving Religion in Quito

Quito has the institutional Catholic infrastructure of an older European pattern — cathedrals, feast days, nativity scenes in the public square — even where actual Mass attendance is in single digits. The wider Ecuador religious landscape: Catholic majority (~74%) with growing evangelical minority and substantial indigenous syncretic traditions in highland regions.

Quito has the critical mass for alternative communities and non-religious social life. It is not New York or London, but it is big enough that leaving organized religion does not mean leaving all organized community.

Quito is among the largest cities in Ecuador, with the corresponding institutional and community depth. The post-religious community here is real, if smaller than in the capital.
