Leaving Religion in Iganga

Iganga has a layered Christian religious life where Catholic, evangelical, and Pentecostal traditions all have visible presence, and each produces its own kind of person who leaves. The wider Uganda religious landscape: Christian majority (~84%, mostly Catholic and Anglican with large Pentecostal growth), Muslim minority (~14%).

In a place the size of Iganga, the religious community is often the community. Leaving it means losing the main social infrastructure, and the rebuild usually involves finding support outside town — online groups, occasional trips to the nearest city, and the slow construction of a new social world.

As a regional hub within Uganda, Iganga provides enough scale that leaving organized religion is possible without leaving your city — though the support networks may be more informal and harder to find than in a national capital.

The cost of leaving religion in Iganga is higher than in more secular places. Community shunning is normalized in some traditions here, and the person who leaves may find that doors close — socially, professionally, and inside the family — in ways that make the rebuild a serious project rather than a weekend decision.
