Discrimination
Although discrimination based on sexual orientation is barred, members of the Venezuelan LGBTI+ community face widespread intolerance in practice. Same-sex marriage remains illegal .
Constitution and government
Article 59 of the Constitution grants protection of religious freedom under the condition that it is not contrary to morality, good customs and public order. However, it also explicitly states that the independence of religious groups are defined by the constitution and law, giving the legislature the power to limit their independence. The Constitution also limits the political influence of religious organizations by forbidding clergy from running for public office.
International obligations
On 24 April 2020, Venezuela formally withdrew from the Organization of American States – a move unprecedented in the inter-American system . As a result, it is no longer bound by its former obligations to human rights enshrined in the American Declaration on the Rights and Duties of Man. However, it remains bound to protect human rights under its obligations as a State Party to international conventions.

No religious tribunals of concern, secular groups operate freely, individuals are not persecuted by the state
The finding concerns association or organizing. It does not verify an individual support group, its privacy practices or whether it is active.

Distinguish curiosity from pressure
Trying something new is not a requirement for proving independence. Keeping a boundary is not automatically obedience to an old rule. Ask whether the choice is wanted, informed and free from pressure in the present. You can change your mind as you learn more.
Choose how much history to share
A first conversation can be about what you want now rather than a complete account of your former community. You can explain that some topics or choices need time without giving details that feel too exposing.

How did religious identity change in Venezuela?
Rage 2 Rebuild’s Venezuela table shows 8.4% religiously unaffiliated in 2010 and 9.7% in 2020, using Pew’s all-age population estimates. The seven categories describe religious identity, not how many individuals left religion or experienced harm. Rounded population changes cannot predict acceptance, guilt, safety or a support outcome.
| Identity | 2010 | 2020 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christian | 89.4% | 88.1% | -1.3 pp |
| Muslim | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Religiously unaffiliated | 8.4% | 9.7% | +1.3 pp |
| Buddhist | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Hindu | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Jewish | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Other religions | 2.1% | 2.1% | 0.0 pp |
“Other religions” combines traditions that cannot be analyzed separately here. A “less than” input stays an inequality; a change involving it is not calculated. Rounding and demographic processes matter. Nationality does not establish anyone’s beliefs.
