Family, community and society
Mainstream Ukrainian religious associations actively participate in public debates on human rights issues. As in many other post-Soviet countries, they promote the non-recognition of same-sex marriages, the strengthening of state support for traditional families, the banning of abortions, the rejection of fluid gender identities, and the broad right to conscientious objection for public servants, medical employees, businessmen, etc., with respect to anti-discrimination measures implemented by the state.
Constitution and government
The 1991 Law on Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations (the Religious Law) states that all religions enjoy equal legal status (Article 5), and, in contrast to other post-Soviet Orthodox-majority states, there are no officially recognised or unofficially endorsed “traditional religions” in Ukraine. The registration of religious organisations is simple and not obligatory for arranging religious activities (Article 8). Further, the Religious Law emphasises that the state shall not interfere in internal religious affairs and prohibits religions from being involved in political life (Article 5) with the objective being to “restore full-fledged dialogue between representatives of various social, ethnic, cultural, and religious groups to foster the creation of a tolerant society and provide for freedom of conscience and worship.”
In Crimea
The individual rights to express personal views on political or other sensitive topics without fear of surveillance or retribution have been violated by the FSB on a regular basis. They reportedly encourage residents “to inform on individuals who express opposition to the annexation, and a climate of fear and intimidation seriously inhibits private discussion of political matters”. The authorities are also reported to be monitoring social media.

How can a man rebuild identity and support after religion?
For men leaving religion in Ukraine, Rage 2 Rebuild suggests this decision: Name a responsibility you still choose and a role you need to reconsider. The two starting points below address family roles, public identity and access to a listening relationship. Check consequential facts with appropriate current help; these are reflection prompts, not a certified procedure.
Separate responsibility from authority over others
Care, dependability and honesty can remain important when a religious role changes. They do not require deciding what another adult must believe. Consider where you want to be accountable and where an expectation to lead has become pressure to perform certainty.
Find a place where the conversation can be honest
A friendship based on an activity may be a useful beginning even if it is not the place for every part of your history. A peer group, personal conversation and qualified professional can offer different kinds of support. Ask what you need before expecting one connection to do everything.

How did religious identity change in Ukraine?
Rage 2 Rebuild’s Ukraine table shows 13.2% religiously unaffiliated in 2010 and 15.1% in 2020, using Pew’s all-age population estimates. The seven categories describe religious identity, not how many individuals left religion or experienced harm. Rounded population changes cannot predict acceptance, guilt, safety or a support outcome.
| Identity | 2010 | 2020 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christian | 85.5% | 83.4% | -2.1 pp |
| Muslim | 0.9% | 0.6% | -0.3 pp |
| Religiously unaffiliated | 13.2% | 15.1% | +1.9 pp |
| Buddhist | 0.1% | 0.3% | +0.2 pp |
| Hindu | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Jewish | 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Other religions | 0.2% | 0.4% | +0.2 pp |
“Other religions” combines traditions that cannot be analyzed separately here. A “less than” input stays an inequality; a change involving it is not calculated. Rounding and demographic processes matter. Nationality does not establish anyone’s beliefs.
