Social and ethical issues
There are mixed fortunes in the UK for advocacy of humanist values. In 2020, same-sex marriage was legally recognised in Northern Ireland. This followed recognition being granted in England and Wales in 2014, and Scotland in 2015. However, humanist marriage in England and Wales has been blocked whilst flourishing in Scotland since 2005 and Northern Ireland since 2018 (see above). Legislation to legalise assisted dying has consistently been rejected by both UK and Scottish Parliaments, despite popular support.
One law for all?
Historically, the Church of England’s canon law and its courts were deeply entangled with the secular law and courts but currently, although canon law is still part of the law of the land, the ecclesiastical system is almost entirely concerned with internal matters to the Church. Other denominations and religions often have their own internal tribunals but again in most instances there is little conflict between the systems. The emergence of sharia councils ( not courts) run by local Muslim imams has, however, raised concerns. Their business is almost entirely to provide (or refuse) religious divorces to Muslim women, and there is strong evidence of patriarchal and misogynist behaviour by some councils. A Muslim Arbitration Tribunal operates under the general law on arbitration and occasionally sharia councils are also reported to do so. …
Communications privacy and civil liberties concerns
Another new law, the Digital Economy Act, came into force in April 2017. It was set to require age verification procedures on all pornographic websites, and restricts the provision of “extreme” pornography, vaguely defined as material that is “grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character”. Open Rights Group criticised the bill before parliamentary approval as constituting “censorship of legal content”, and argued that it increased the risk of credit card fraud and personal data leaks by requiring sites to collect personal information. ORG adds: “Blocking websites is a disproportionate, technical response to a complex, social issue. The UK’s children need education, not censorship, to keep them safe.” After multiple delays, the plan to require age verification measures on pornographic websites was finally dropped in October 2019.

Which United Kingdom findings should I check before acting?
Rage 2 Rebuild highlights 4 published findings for men leaving religion in United Kingdom. Religious courts or tribunals rule directly on some family or ‘moral’ matters; it is legally an opt-in system, but the possibility of social coercion is very clear
A family or personal-status issue may require more than an agreement between relatives. Formal jurisdiction, consent and the actual procedure matter.
A question to verify: Which authority handles this particular family or relationship decision, and what independent advice is available?
Religious groups control some public or social services
The report describes social or institutional pressure. That context matters, but it cannot predict the response of one family or community.
A question to verify: Who would learn about the decision, and what essential support could change if that happened?
Some concerns about political or media freedoms, not specific to the non-religious
This is a published assessment of institutions, not an individual outcome or a current legal determination.
A question to verify: Which part of this assessment applies to the actual decision, and what still needs current local verification?
Discriminatory prominence is given to religious bodies, traditions or leaders
This is a published assessment of institutions, not an individual outcome or a current legal determination.
A question to verify: Which part of this assessment applies to the actual decision, and what still needs current local verification?
How can a man rebuild identity and support after religion?
For men leaving religion in United Kingdom, Rage 2 Rebuild suggests this decision: Name a responsibility you still choose and a role you need to reconsider. The two starting points below address family roles, public identity and access to a listening relationship. Check consequential facts with appropriate current help; these are reflection prompts, not a certified procedure.
Separate responsibility from authority over others
Care, dependability and honesty can remain important when a religious role changes. They do not require deciding what another adult must believe. Consider where you want to be accountable and where an expectation to lead has become pressure to perform certainty.
Find a place where the conversation can be honest
A friendship based on an activity may be a useful beginning even if it is not the place for every part of your history. A peer group, personal conversation and qualified professional can offer different kinds of support. Ask what you need before expecting one connection to do everything.

How did religious identity change in United Kingdom?
Rage 2 Rebuild’s United Kingdom table shows 28.8% religiously unaffiliated in 2010 and 40.2% in 2020, using Pew’s all-age population estimates. The seven categories describe religious identity, not how many individuals left religion or experienced harm. Rounded population changes cannot predict acceptance, guilt, safety or a support outcome.
| Identity | 2010 | 2020 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christian | 62.4% | 49.4% | -13.0 pp |
| Muslim | 5.3% | 6.4% | +1.1 pp |
| Religiously unaffiliated | 28.8% | 40.2% | +11.4 pp |
| Buddhist | 0.4% | 0.5% | +0.1 pp |
| Hindu | 1.5% | 1.7% | +0.2 pp |
| Jewish | 0.5% | 0.4% | -0.1 pp |
| Other religions | 1.2% | 1.4% | +0.2 pp |
“Other religions” combines traditions that cannot be analyzed separately here. A “less than” input stays an inequality; a change involving it is not calculated. Rounding and demographic processes matter. Nationality does not establish anyone’s beliefs.
