Education and children’s rights
Article 40 of the Constitution establishes public educational institutions as secular. However, the law permits and funds religious instruction in public schools for “traditional” and other state-recognized religious groups. Parents may choose either religious instruction or secular ethics classes for their children. Schools decide which of the traditional religious groups will be represented in their curricula on the basis of requests from parents for children up to age 14, after which students present the requests themselves.
“Traditional” privilege
Other privileges afforded to “traditional” religions include the right to teach religion in private or public schools, and the right to register marriages. The law allows all registered religious groups to own property for prayer houses, homes, and other uses and permits construction of facilities necessary for their activities.
Gender equality and LGBTI+ rights
In June 2008, with the support of the Catholic Church, Parliament passed the National Family Policy Concept bill, which recognizes only those families that are based on the marriage of a man and a woman. According to the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), in the period between 2012 and 2018, the Lithuanian Parliament considered nine openly homophobic and/or transphobic legislative initiatives seeking to limit the rights and freedoms of LGBTI+ people. Lithuania remains one of a few jurisdictions in the European Union without any legal recognition of same-sex relationships. Moreover, the intense public debate around the anti-LGBTI+ legislative proposals has created a hostile atmosphere for LGBTI+ people in Lithuania.

What if my partner still believes and I do not?
For a partner still believes in Lithuania, Rage 2 Rebuild suggests this decision: Choose one household agreement that needs an explicit conversation. The two starting points below address partnership agreements, family-law context and shared parenting. Check consequential facts with appropriate current help; these are reflection prompts, not a certified procedure.
Make the hidden agreements visible
Attendance, money, food, religious objects, family visits, intimacy and raising children may all carry assumptions that were never discussed. List the agreements that have changed and the ones that still work. A disagreement about a ritual may also involve belonging, identity or fear about the relationship’s future.
Protect consent on both sides
Neither partner should have to perform belief, accept unwanted religious activity or be mocked into changing a worldview. A workable conversation distinguishes a request, an invitation and a requirement. It also leaves room for a genuine no.

How did religious identity change in Lithuania?
Rage 2 Rebuild’s Lithuania table shows 6.8% religiously unaffiliated in 2010 and 7.1% in 2020, using Pew’s all-age population estimates. The seven categories describe religious identity, not how many individuals left religion or experienced harm. Rounded population changes cannot predict acceptance, guilt, safety or a support outcome.
| Identity | 2010 | 2020 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christian | 92.5% | 92.2% | -0.3 pp |
| Muslim | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Religiously unaffiliated | 6.8% | 7.1% | +0.3 pp |
| Buddhist | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Hindu | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Jewish | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Other religions | 0.5% | 0.6% | +0.1 pp |
“Other religions” combines traditions that cannot be analyzed separately here. A “less than” input stays an inequality; a change involving it is not calculated. Rounding and demographic processes matter. Nationality does not establish anyone’s beliefs.
