Violations against women
The government have failed to address abusive, unscientific “virginity tests” of women who apply to join the military, or to institute measures to curb female genital mutilation, which continues to be used in rites of passage in some areas.
Education and children’s rights
However, education is under joint control of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The Constitution defines education always in terms that are mixed up with distinctly religious aspiration: the aims of education (Article 31.3) are to “increase the level of spiritual belief, devoutness and moral character in the context of developing the life of the nation” and to do so (Article 31.5) “with the highest respect for religious values and national unity for the advancement of civilisation and prosperity of humankind”.
Six religions, no non-religion
For the time being it remains the case that Indonesia recognizes only six official religions—Islam, Catholicism, Protestantism, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Hinduism—and requires its citizens to adhere to one of these. Persons who do not identify with one of the six official religions, including people with no religion, continue to experience official discrimination. This discrimination occurs often in the context of civil registration of marriages and births, and other situation involving family law.

What deserves attention when a woman’s beliefs and roles change?
For women leaving religion in Indonesia, Rage 2 Rebuild suggests this decision: Identify the specific choice and the practical or institutional constraint affecting it. The two starting points below address gendered expectations, access to services and family responsibilities. Check consequential facts with appropriate current help; these are reflection prompts, not a certified procedure.
Make the expectation specific
Dress, caregiving, education, partnership, parenthood and leadership can each carry different pressures. Choose the expectation that is affecting your current decision. It is easier to assess a particular demand than a claim that an entire life must fit one approved role.
Separate permission from practical access
A formal right and the ability to use it are different questions. Consider money, transport, documents, childcare, information and whether someone can interfere with access. Country reports may describe institutional restrictions or service barriers; they cannot determine what an individual provider will do today.

How did religious identity change in Indonesia?
Rage 2 Rebuild’s Indonesia table shows Less than 0.1% religiously unaffiliated in 2010 and Less than 0.1% in 2020, using Pew’s all-age population estimates. The seven categories describe religious identity, not how many individuals left religion or experienced harm. Rounded population changes cannot predict acceptance, guilt, safety or a support outcome.
| Identity | 2010 | 2020 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christian | 9.9% | 10.3% | +0.4 pp |
| Muslim | 87.5% | 87.0% | -0.5 pp |
| Religiously unaffiliated | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Buddhist | 0.7% | 0.7% | 0.0 pp |
| Hindu | 1.7% | 1.6% | -0.1 pp |
| Jewish | Less than 0.1% | Less than 0.1% | Not calculated |
| Other religions | Less than 0.1% | 0.4% | Not calculated |
“Other religions” combines traditions that cannot be analyzed separately here. A “less than” input stays an inequality; a change involving it is not calculated. Rounding and demographic processes matter. Nationality does not establish anyone’s beliefs.
