Ocú has the architecture of Catholic institutional life visible everywhere, but the personal practice underneath has been thinning for two generations. The wider Panama religious landscape: Catholic ~65%, Protestant ~20%, and a sizeable Caribbean and Asian religious minority including Jehovah’s Witnesses.

In a place the size of Ocú, the religious community is often the community. Leaving it means losing the main social infrastructure, and the rebuild usually involves finding support outside town — online groups, occasional trips to the nearest city, and the slow construction of a new social world.

Around Ocú, the cost of leaving falls hardest inside the family rather than in public life. The community may talk, but the real weight is at the dinner table, the holiday gathering, the moment someone asks the kids if they said their prayers.
