Bawku is a place where the evangelical deconstruction story is familiar — people leave, and the community reorganizes around the ones who stay. The wider Ghana religious landscape: Heavily Christian (~71%) with very large Pentecostal/charismatic movement, significant Muslim minority (~18%), and integrated traditional African religious practice.

In a city the size of Bawku, leaving the dominant religious tradition is more visible. People notice. The upside is that once you do it, other people who are quietly struggling may reach out. The downside is the initial period of being the topic of conversation.

As a regional hub within Ghana, Bawku provides enough scale that leaving organized religion is possible without leaving your city — though the support networks may be more informal and harder to find than in a national capital.

The cost of leaving religion in Bawku is higher than in more secular places.
