Leaving the Religion You Were Raised In
Leaving Mormonism is not the same as leaving the Watchtower. Leaving evangelicalism is not the same as leaving Catholicism. Leaving Islam from inside an immigrant family with strict community enforcement is not the same as either of those. The texture is different. The cost is different. The way the family responds is different. The shape of what comes after is different.
These pages are written for the specific traditions, on their own terms. Pick the one that fits where you came from, or read across them if you grew up at the intersection of more than one. Every page here is hand-written. Nothing on this site is templated boilerplate.
Leaving the LDS Church
For people who left the Mormon church or are in the middle of leaving. The temple, the family, the testimony you no longer have, and what comes next. Honest writing from someone who walked it.
Read →Leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses
For people who left the Jehovah’s Witnesses, are fading, or have been disfellowshipped. The shunning, the family that will not speak to you, the world after Armageddon never came. Honest writing from someone who walked an analogous road.
Read →Leaving Evangelical Christianity
For people deconstructing from American evangelical Christianity, non-denominational megachurches, Southern Baptist, and conservative Protestant traditions. Honest writing about losing your faith, your tribe, and the certainty you used to have.
Read →Leaving the Catholic Church
For ex-Catholics, lapsed Catholics, and people walking away from the church they were raised in. The guilt machinery, the family Mass, the saints you still half-believe in, and what comes next.
Read →Leaving Pentecostal & Charismatic
For people leaving Pentecostal, charismatic, Word of Faith, IFB, or Apostolic churches. Speaking in tongues, prophetic words, faith healing, demons under every rock — and what it does to a body to come out of all of it.
Read →Leaving Islam
For ex-Muslims who left or are leaving Islam — including those who cannot say so out loud yet because of family, community, or country. Honest writing on apostasy, secrecy, and rebuilding a life when the cost is high.
Read →Leaving Orthodox Judaism
For people who went off the derech (OTD) from Hasidic, ultra-Orthodox, Yeshivish, or Modern Orthodox communities. The shidduch system, the language, the family, and the immigrant-style transition into a wider world.
Read →Already Out? Read About What Comes After.
The denomination pages are about getting out. The next set of pages is about everything that comes after — the family that stops calling, the spouse who still believes, the holidays, the kids, the guilt that lingers, the friends you have to find, and figuring out what you actually believe now.
Life After LeavingNone of These Quite Fit?
Write to me with what you grew up in. I read every message myself and I will write back honestly. There is no wrong way to start.
