Fendou is in a largely secular country where being non-religious is unremarkable in the broader culture. The wider China religious landscape: Officially atheist state with growing religious populations — Buddhism, Taoism, and folk religion most widespread; Christian growth (~5%, mostly underground evangelical/Pentecostal house churches); Sunni Muslim Uyghur and Hui populations under significant state pressure.

In a city the size of Fendou, leaving the dominant religious tradition is more visible. People notice. The upside is that once you do it, other people who are quietly struggling may reach out. The downside is the initial period of being the topic of conversation.

The cost of leaving religion in Fendou is higher than in more secular places. Community shunning is normalized in some traditions here, and the person who leaves may find that doors close — socially, professionally, and inside the family — in ways that make the rebuild a serious project rather than a weekend decision.
