Sarajevo has both Sunni and Shia communities and a layered religious identity politics. The wider Bosnia and Herzegovina religious landscape: Religiously plural and politically loaded — Sunni Muslim (Bosniak, ~51%), Serbian Orthodox (~31%), Roman Catholic (Croat, ~15%); religion entwined with ethnicity.
At Sarajevo's size, there is usually at least one ex-member group or secular community within reach, but the dominant religious culture is still visible in local politics, school board meetings, and the family networks that run through the biggest congregations in town.
As the largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo tends to set the tone for the country's broader religious-cultural conversation. The post-religious and ex-member infrastructure here is usually the most visible nationally, and the exit conversation is more public than it is in smaller places.
The cost of leaving religion in Sarajevo is higher than in more secular places. Community shunning is normalized in some traditions here, and the person who leaves may find that doors close — socially, professionally, and inside the family — in ways that make the rebuild a serious project rather than a weekend decision.
