Axum is part of an Orthodox Christian country where the Church is woven into national identity and family life. The wider Ethiopia religious landscape: Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo plurality (~43%), Sunni Muslim (~33%), and growing Pentecostal/Protestant minority (~20%).

In a place the size of Axum, the religious community is often the community. Leaving it means losing the main social infrastructure, and the rebuild usually involves finding support outside town — online groups, occasional trips to the nearest city, and the slow construction of a new social world.

The cost of leaving religion in Axum is higher than in more secular places.
