Newark is a city with enough religious diversity that the dominant Christian tradition does not totally define the social landscape — though inside the family it still might. The wider United States religious landscape: Christian-majority but rapidly secularizing — large evangelical (~25%), Catholic (~21%), and growing "nones" (~28%); LDS heartland in the Mountain West, Black Protestant traditions in the South, growing Muslim and Hindu populations in cities.

At Newark's size, there is usually at least one ex-member group or secular community within reach, but the dominant religious culture is still visible in local politics, school board meetings, and the family networks that run through the biggest congregations in town.
